Our Story
Stewards of the land
Wadi Sabarah is a lodge born from reverence. We exist as stewards of this land — safeguarding its stories, fostering authentic connection with place and people, and preserving its heritage for generations to come.
The Legend of Sabarah
Over a century ago, Sabarah—an independent Bedouin woman—traversed the Eastern Desert alone. Defying the customs of her time, she never settled or married. Instead, she wandered hundreds of kilometers, a nomad driven by a spirit of discovery. She was a healer of both body and spirit and a preacher of wisdom, earning the enduring respect of a community that still remembers her for her curiosity, sense of adventure, and the courage to break the norm.
The Wadi & The Vision
Wadi Sabarah, where she once found sanctuary, is now a living canvas. We have spent 25 years building a sanctuary rooted in reverence for Egypt’s authentic culture, history, and nature. Our project is suis generis – a vision formed from the spirit of place.
Our project is a collective, multi-collaborative effort where passion replaces ego. It is shaped by a custodianship of diverse minds:
- Historians, Archeologists and Geologists who curate our galleries.
- Ecologists who breathe life into our gardens.
- Upper Egyptian Masons who hand-carved our stone structures.
- Architects who interpret tradition through a modern lens.
A Living Legacy
Wadi Sabarah is a collective exploration of the area’s expansive and layered history. Our community is made up of individuals who wish to not only preserve that history and Egyptian culture with all its facets, but to evolve with its beautiful complexity.
As you wander through our halls and gardens, you are stepping into an ever-changing journey. We hope to pass this spirit of exploration to the next generation—and we invite you to add your own brushstroke to our story.
